Kyoshi Dave Herman
“I started my martial arts journey at age 7 in 1982 before “The Karate Kid” movie came out. Back then, there was a class made up of mostly adults and just a few kids. Class was serious, strict and really hard. In all my years as a kid, I tried lots of sports and just wasn’t very good at them. I wasn’t very athletic, or coordinated… I wasn’t very strong or fit… I was never the first or second one picked for anything in gym class, or anything, anywhere, for that matter. Martial Arts was the thing that turned that all around for me. It was ok, to NOT be very good… that’s what Sensei was there for… to help guide you to a bigger, stronger, more confident version of yourself. Like the spider that bit Peter Parker, and turned him into Spider-Man. That’s who my Sensei has always been, and still is, to me. I opened New Generation Karate back in 1998, so that I could be that person for all who step through the doors of my dojo, who step on the mat, and who follow The Way of the Warrior. What an amazingly empowering and indescribably rewarding journey it has been.” -Kyoshi Dave Herman

What Our Students Are Saying About Us
This dojo, Kyoshi Herman and all of the staff are incredible. At first my son started at age 5, after his dad died suddenly. It was naturally very upsetting and he had a lot of emotions to deal with, especially at that young age, which is difficult. Kyoshi Herman was so kind to him and still is. He helps him get through those humps with his emotion and teaches him to channel them in a positive, productive way. Now my 5 year old twin daughters attend as well. They love it. They come home proud of their belts and about all of the moves they learn. They also learn great lessons like help mom around the house and don't wait until you're asked. Invaluable! They also have camps for days off and fun events like Nerf Wars and movie nights. Don't skip this place!
My son is autistic and has special needs. He is used to being treated “differently” at school with a one to one side and in other areas of his life. But at the DOJO, he is treated the same as every other child. Every child who practices at the dojo is taught acceptance and understanding. Every child at the dojo helps teach my son not just karate, but basic human interactions. Kyoshi Herman is so patient that he shows my son combinations and skills over and over again until he finally understands, without getting frustrated or annoyed. Kyoshi has such a fun way of learning skills that the children respond positively. He not only teaches the skill necessary to promote levels of belts, but everyday skills needed in this world today such as active shooter drills. The dojo has nerf wars days and movie nights where the children are not just associates in the dojo, but friends, even brothers and sisters. If you are looking for a place to train and learn karate for you or your children, this is the place!!
I never write reviews but this dojo is truly the best karate school and I can't recommend it highly enough! My son has been attending classes here for the last 1.5 years, his confidence and skill level has improved tremendously. Koyshi is incredibly knowledgeable, caring, patient, and he takes the time to personalize his instruction to each student's individual needs and goals. All the instructors really go above and beyond to engage all levels of students in classes. Overall, if you are looking to learn karate, improve your physical fitness, or develop your self-defense skills, I highly recommend this karate school. It is a fantastic place to learn, grow, and I consider this dojo the best of the best!
